I AM “faer warrior who travels bearing god’s gifts,” and let me tell you: had I been raised with an awareness of my name’s meaning it would be a whole new world right now. In fact, it truly is even though my awakening came later in life…after I had it all figured out!
My given name is Travis which is derived from the olde engleeshee which is actually French [ask me whether “English” was engineered for linguistic warfare…) for “traverse” (think the last name, Travers); and I was so knighted because my father did not like to tell girls his given name, Bruce. My middle name is Matthew which means “god’s gift” in Greek.
Lastly, my surname has three Scots-glish versions (thanks to Ellis Is., I AM sure!):
a. Findlay
b. Finlay
c. Finley
All three derive from, Findlaech, which means “faer-warrior,” or “just-warrior.”
So, there you have it. Unbeknownst to my parents, I was given a name that gives “Dances With Wolves” a run for its heritage. Taken as a whole, my name intimates that my awareness preceded my existence; else, how can this be explained–that my given name would actually resemble my character/persona? Little did I know I would also put my own attention on naming each of my own (5!!) children with an awareness of their own names’ meaning.
